Inheritance (succession) law

Are you moving to the UK or moving to the Netherlands from the UK and not sure whether you need to amend your Will (or even have a Will drawn up – the answer is almost always ‘yes!’)? We will advise you on the various options.

Relationships

Are you getting married or living together in England or are you getting married or cohabiting in the Netherlands and (at least) one of you is from England, bear in mind that the rules around getting married, entering into a registered partnership and cohabitation are quite different in both countries. We will be happy to help you make the choices that work for you.

Estate administration

If someone dies in the Netherlands and there are assets in England, or the deceased lived in England and still had a bank account in the Netherlands, it is very likely that the person tasked with the administration (winding up) of the estate (the executor and/or the heirs) will run into all kinds of practical difficulties; a Dutch Certificate of Inheritance (‘Verklaring van Erfrecht’) cannot usually be used to arrange anything in England and, vice versa, a Dutch bank will often not pay out money on the basis of an English Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration. With our experience and contacts, we will assist you along the way.

For the legal profession

Do you work in legal practice, do you have clients who come to you with Dutch inheritance and/or family law matters and are you not quite sure how to answer these questions? Then don’t hesitate to contact us.
